Southern Vermont Trails Association (SoVTA)

Southern Vermont Trails Association (SoVTA) is a member of the Catamount Trail Association, a not for profit, which has many chapters throughout Vermont including SoVTA. A group of outdoor enthusiasts founded SoVTA with the vision of creating an outdoor multi-use network that can be used all year round in the southern part of Vermont valley and surrounding areas. They have created numerous hiking, biking and backcountry ski zones througout the region.

SoVTA have had a major hand in developing the 3 backcountry zones listed below. Also, you will find a number of resources to help you make your southern Vermont backcountry skiing experience go smoothly and more enjoyably. Zone difficulties vary and are for public use for all outdoor recreationist.


Dover Town Forest - East Dover, VT

SoVTA partnered up with the Dover Town Forest Conservation Commision, the Town of Dover and The USFS to cordinate and make these trails possible for our enjoyment. The Dover Town Forest backcountry area offers cross country skiing and five unique backcountry zones of varying difficulties: Baby Town Frolic, Three Blind Mice, Chutes N Ladders, Grandma's and Chicken Little.

Snowmobile traffic may be present in this area so please stay alert. Keep dogs leashed.

Directions: Parking for the Dover Town Forest BC Zone is located at the end of Rice Hill Road - Directions.

Horace Hill - West Dover, VT

SoVTA partnered up with the Town of Dover and the Caplan's to cordinate and make these trails possible for our enjoyment. The Horace Hill backcountry zone currently offers four differnt backcountry zones with a varity of gladed terrain over two areas, Townie 1 and Townie 2.

Snowmobile traffic may be present in this area so please stay alert. Keep dogs leashed.

Directions: Parking for the Horace Hill BC Zone is located off VT-100 across the street from TC's Takeout - Directions.

Stratton Town Forest - Stratton, VT

Stratton Town Forest has a lot of outdoor activities including the Hollywood Bowl backcountry ski zone.

Snowmobile Traffic may be present in this area so please stay alert. Keep dogs leashed.

Directions: Located on the west side of VT Rte 100, near the Dover Town line. The parking lot only holds 8 vehicles so be prepared for a plan B. - Directions.
